The Great Indian Wildlife Tour

Overview
Nature tourism across many Tiger reserves is offering a whole new funding mechanism for their maintenance and protection, sometimes raising more money than their own governmental budgets. It’s giving new livelihoods and new economic opportunities for once poor rural communities bordering these forests, decreasing rural poverty. Visitors in parks deter poachers, woodchoppers and illegal grazers and brings the spotlight to bare on a host of magnificent and invaluable wildlife and wildlands that few people cared about – even a few years ago. Opening up wildlife parks has also brought exciting nature experiences to thousands of international visitors but also millions of domestic visitors too – creating a new army of passionate and local advocates for conservation and protection. By saving forests we are in fact saving much more than just their tigers. 830 million people depend on the water that tiger forests release. Forests help to mitigate the very worrying effects of climate change onthe subcontinent. If we save tigers we save whole ecosystems, millions of species and a host of other essential nature based services to millions of urban and tribal peoples including medicines, clean air, food - besides our very own wellbeing too. However, we are not out of the woods yet. We need to do more; much more. You as a visitor can help us by joining this rising tide of hope and success, by joining Globe Travel Centre on this tour. They have committed to support TOFTigers’ PUG certified nature friendly lodgings as part of your stay, and to drive sustainability through their supply chain, and supporting us in their efforts. Now we’ve done the work - you can go and enjoy this adventure in the wilds of India.

Detailed Itinerary

  • Day 01: Delhi
You will be welcomed by your GTC representative at the Indira Gandhi International Airport and transferred to your hotel in North Delhi. Perfectly located between the Old and New City, you can all but time travel between the two. Relax and unwind upon your arrival: you have the rest of the day at your leisure. Over night stay at The Claridges.
  • Day 02: Satpura National Park
An early start for the flight to Bhopal. You will be met on arrival and transferred to Satpura National Park. On the way you may choose to stop at The Bhimbetka Caves famous for their ancient cave paintings which exhibit the earliest signs of human life on the Indian subcontinent. Continue onto Satpura and check into the hotel. Rest of the day at leisure. The Satpura National Park that draws its name from the ancient Satpura Hills has been a specially created tiger reserve since 1981. Spread out over five hundred square kilometres, this national park is a thriving ecosystem for animals, birds and rare plants, trees and herbs. However, it has only relatively recently opened up for tourism, making is less developed, less visited and therefore one of our favourite parks. It is also the only park in India which allows a variety of safari options from canoeing on the Tewa Dam, jeep safaris, walking safaris through the core area and the night drives in the buffer zones are also possible. Though to see a tiger is rare during the jungle safaris here, territories are now becoming better known and so sightings are increasing; however, this park is known for its excellent leopard and sloth bear sightings
  • Day 03: Satpura National Park
An early start for your morning jeep safari into the park. Return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon try a canoe ride to view the sunset over the dam, followed by a sundowner. These canoeing safaris provide a great opportunity for birding, photography and if luck is on your side, you may see some mammals too!
  • Day 04: Satpura National Park Mobile Camping
Being on foot in the jungles & living under canvas gets you really upfront with the wilds of Central India. Therefore, today we take you on a walking & overnight camping experience in Satpura Tiger Reserve with a highly trained naturalist. This safari offers high adventure and opportunity to feel the jungle at close quarters while exploring uncharted terrains comprising of rugged hills, gorgeous streams and tribal villages, and which is home to the tiger, leopard and sloth bear. After breakfast, you will be driven to the starting point of the mobile safari. Trek for four hours through the Sal forest inside Satpura National Park to reach Denwa view point where lunch will be served. After lunch a further two hours trek to reach the mobile camp. An evening in the camp, around the fire, listening to the sounds of the jungle before retiring into your tent for the night.
  • Day 05: Satpura - Pench
After breakfast, a one hour walk will take you to where you will be be met by your driver for the 4-5 hour drive to reach Pench. The Pench River that meanders through the lower reaches of the southern ranges of the Satpura Hills lends its name to this wildlife sanctuary, which spans an area of roughly 758 sq. kms. During the summer months, the river dries into rivulets and the Pench Reservoir, deep in the jungle, becomes the main source of water for the wildlife. In addition to the tiger, the thick jungles of teak and other deciduous trees are home to various species of wild animals like leopards, bison, hyenas, wild dog and chinkara. The dense jungles of Pench also has a 12km long nature trail that can be explored and which weaves close to the Pench River and circles the forested area called Bodhanala. Listen to the calls of the wild and experience a sense of one-ness with lush green nature surrounding you. Bird-watchers also head to Pench throughout the year to spot several rare and endangered species of birds like white-rumped vultures and king vultures. Several species of owls also breed here. Day SIX +-
  • Day 06: Pench National Park
An early start for the morning game drive, return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon visit the organic garden maintained by the lodge followed by a cooking class by their expert chef utilising their own organic produce and food purchased locally from the villagers. An evening Jeep safari into the national park.
  • Day 07: Pench National Park
Morning game drive; afternoon at leisure (optional game drive to be determined at the time of booking)
  • Day 08: Pench - Kanha
This morning, a transfer to Kanha with a difference! Cycle through Rukhad Wildlife Sanctuary with lunch break at Sakata. You will also pass through the buffer zone and cycle through villages where you will have some wonderful interactions with the tribes of the region, see how they live and be welcomed into their homes. After lunch, continue onto Kanha by car. Rest of the day at leisure. Nestled in the jungles of the Mekal Range of the ancient Satpura hills, the Kanha National Park is one of the oldest and largest wildlife sanctuaries across India. Kanha was declared a Reserve Forest in the late nineteenth century itself and by 1933 upgraded to the status of a wildlife sanctuary. Spread across a sprawling area of nearly 2000 sq km, this national park offers the true safari experience. Head deep into the jungles to try your luck at spotting an elusive tiger or whilst also keeping a look out for its other inhabitants such as leopard, wild dog, jackal, sloth bear, wild boar and Gaur. It is also a bird watcher’s delight, home as it is to around 280 species of birds.
  • Day 09 – Kanha National Park
Morning and afternoon game drives in the National Park. Experienced jungle guides offer you the advantage of local wisdom and make the safari deep into the jungles a memorable experience. There are morning and afternoon safaris every day except Wednesday. However, the locals would advise you to set out bright and early if spotting a tiger is high on your list! Guides can also take you by foot along a well-marked nature trail, nearly seven kilometres long – enjoy the walk, take time out to listen to bird calls to locate some rare species that are often spotted here.
  • Day 10 - Kanha National Park
We feel it is also important to support the villagers around the National Parks and also keep in mind the delicate eco systems which must be protected. This morning, you will visit some of the local schools, supported by the lodge you are staying at to look at the education initiatives they are helping with and the assistance in providing employment to the local youth. On the way back you may choose to walk or cycle to a nearby village. We encourage giving back to the community we operate in and these walks are an excellent way for our guests to immerse in the local culture and experience rural India. Afternoon enjoy a game drive in the NP
  • Day 11 – Kanha National Park
Early morning game drive in the park. Return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, enjoy an escorted nature walk & birding trail. It is a fantastic opportunity for observing and looking for the smaller fauna and flora that you normally would pass by. Watch for the little insects and smell the fragrance of the grasses that line the pathway. As an avid birder or even a beginner, you will be delighted by the wide array of bird species found at the lodge and the surrounding fields and water holes. The lodge has successfully managed to retain the existing forest and supplement it with protecting root stock which has helped them record several species in the lodge itself. You can join the resident naturalists for interesting Nature trails, on foot or on bicycle in and around the lodge.
  • Day 12 - Kanha- Jabalpur- Delhi
Drive to Jabalpur airport (about 3 hours); fly to Delhi
  • Day 13 : Departure
This morning, you will be transferred to airport to board your return flight.

When Should I go?

The months of September through to March are considered to be favourable months to travel to India. September has the added advantage of being in the “good weather” bracket but also technically falls in the off season in most places, so prices are cheaper for travel in September. The months of October through to February are pleasant in most parts of the country, though you will find the temperatures varying between chilly in the North and warmer in the southern parts of the country.

India’s weather is varied and different parts of the country may get monsoons at different times. May and June are hot months across the country except for the hill stations in the North.

Monsoon Months in India

The country gets monsoons in the months of June and July though along the south western coast, there are monsoons in the period between October to December too.

June and July are monsoon months in Kerala, the showers being heavy at first and then easing off gradually. Whilst these are not the best months for tours, interestingly, this happens to the best time for travellers seeking the therapeutic Ayurveda treatment which is said to be most effective in these months.
